The power of text in gaming was recognised last week, when Dom Hodgson and Alistair MacDonald were awarded Best Game at Over the Air.
Judged by 100% Indie, the Best Game category at Over the Air was one of several awards given at the event, which invites hackers and coders to come together and share ideas and inspiration over the space of 36 hours.
Dom, from Leeds, and Alistair, from Newcastle, created a multiplayer adventure that is played by old fashioned SMS text message. Each player could enter different rooms to seek out objectives, by texting the game and each other. A link to PayPal gave players the option to buy in-game items and move onto the next stage in the game.
Spanner Spencer from 100% Indie judged and presented the prize and was impressed with the level of thought that had gone into the game. “The guys admitted they weren’t game developers, but the way that they approached the game meant that it worked really well. It had a challenge, a strong monetization model, ingenious cross-platform compatibility, plus a little bit of competition, and I kept playing it, which is a good sign.”
Their prize is a trip to the 100% Indie and Chillingo offices to learn more about mobile gaming - Dom and Alistair will meet the team and have lunch with Chris Byatte and Joe Wee of Chillingo. “It was great to win Best Game - we only create very small games for fun, we’re not real game developers - but it’ll be brilliant to meet real game publishers to talk about how it all works,” said Dom.

100% Indie had attended the event for the first time with Samsung, and as well as using its expertise to judge the Best Game award, provided attendees with new kit information as well as advice on game visibility and getting started in the industry.
