XCOM 2 confirmed for PC, slated for November release

A full sequel to 2012 sci-fi strategy reboot XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been officially revealed.

Developed by Enemy Unknown creator Firaxis Games and published by 2K, XCOM 2 will take place 20 years from now on an Earth where aliens have already conquered humanity, as opposed to Enemy Unknown’s attempt to fight off the invading threat from space.

The game was originally teased via the Advent Future website, with some believing it to be the previously hinted-at first-person sci-fi game from BioShock creator Ken Levine. However, such rumours have now been proved incorrect.

New gameplay features in XCOM 2 will include procedurally-generated levels, as well as a greater level of modding support.

Five new player-character classes, expanded soldier customisation, a greater number of enemy types and improvements to XCOM’s turn-based combat will also be introduced.

The title is currently only confirmed for release on PC this November, with Mac and Linux releases to follow. Console editions of XCOM 2 are yet to be detailed.

Predecessor Enemy Unknown saw a simultaneous release on PS3 and Xbox 360 alongside PC, with iOS and Android versions arriving in mid-2013. A standalone expansion titled Enemy Within was released in November 2013.
