Updated Rig of 24 powerful Vicon T160 cameras set up at Digicinemaâ??s new CG animation studio in Poland

Vicon adds bleeding-edge mo-cap tech to Eastern hub

Correction: Develop’s first report stated that Vicon had ownership of the new Digicinema studio, when in fact it is providing its technology for the facility. Amended article follows:

Global motion-capture giant Vicon is providing technology for a new studio at Digicinema, the Polish mo-cap hub servicing the game and film industries.

Vicom – whose owning group Oxford Metric has a clientele including Sega, Nintendo, SCE, Ubisoft, Activision-Blizzard, Electronic Arts and Square Enix – has sold its T160 camera system to Digicinema as the Polish facility opens its new CG animation studio.

The Vicon T160 camera reportedly has “four times the resolution of any other motion capture camera”, with a resolution of 16 megapixels, capturing 10-bit grayscale using 4704 X 3456 pixels. The cameras can capture speeds of up to 2,000 frames per second.

“Digicinema is already well established as a provider of excellent services to the movies and games industry,” says visual effects supervisor Mikolaj Valencia.

“But we wanted to take things to a whole new level. By adding the Vicon system to our portfolio we have become the only motion capture studio in Eastern Europe and we plan to enable movie makers and games developers to find faster and more cost-effective routes to adding rich 3D graphics to their projects.”

Doug Reinke, chief executive of Vicon, applauded his company’s camera technology: “Our customers can now accurately track the finest detail, and the subtlest movements in even the largest volumes,” he said.

The studio will add to Digicinema’s range of production facilities, which include a music scoring studio, a sound post production studio, an advanced digital intermediate process and film dubbing theatre, as well as sound stages.
