Major improvements and more to come from 3D sculpting tool.

Mudbox entirely re-written for 09 edition

Autodesk’s first release of Mudbox, which updates the 2007 edition, has been almost entirely re-written to allow for its suite of new features.

“There were three key areas we wanted to focus on: overall performance; texture painting; and then this whole category we call rendering and presentation,” revealed co-creator Dave Cardwell, in our latest Tool Focus on Mudbox 2009.

What that meant was something close to starting from scratch, as Cardwell explained: “The only things that are the same are some of the staff images and the file open and save system. Everything else is new.”

Furthermore, there’s plenty still to be added to the 3D sculpting tool. “We didn’t get close to doing everything we wanted to do,” he said. “There are some key areas we’re currently working on but haven’t been able to get to just because of time constraints – so expect a lot from Mudbox over the coming months.”
