Number of studios increased from 448 to 620 in 2013

Microstudios make up 60% of UK game industry

59 per cent of all UK development studios employ four staff or less, according to a Tiga survey.

The report claimed the total number of studios in the UK increased from 448 to 620 in 2013, up by 38 per cent.

It noted that while in 2012 the number of studios employing four staff or less made up 50 per cent of the UK industry, that has now risen to 59 per cent. Despite the percentage change, both the number of microstudios and larger developers has risen in the last year.

“This is a significant moment in the history of the UK video games industry," said Rebellion creative director and TIGA chairman Jason Kingsley.

“Microstudios and mobile now dominate the sector. The massive proliferation of new studios in the last two years has contributed to this rebalancing of our industry, and with the boost from games tax relief coming into effect, the rise of the indie shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.”
