DRM to trigger blackouts across Ubisoft games

Publisher apologises as Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell titles go dark

Six Ubisoft games that customers have already paid for will be inaccessible for an unknown period of time, the publisher has confirmed.

The shut down will occur because of a flaw in the controversial DRM technology used within each game.  Various Ubisoft products require a constant connection with the publisher’s servers to verify their authenticity, but from February 7th Ubisoft will be moving its servers and thus will lock the products out.

Titles affected are Tom Clancy’s Hawx 2 (PC), Settlers Paths to a Kingdom (PC), Might & Magic Heroes VI (PC), Splinter Cell conviction (Mac) Assassin’s Creed (Mac), and The Settlers (Mac).

There is no timeline on when the games will be back up and running.

“We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience,” Ubisoft said.

“This move ultimately will help us improve the maintenance of our infrastructure and deliver better uptime and greatly improved services for our customers.”
