UK studio head Romanos gets nod for top prize
Ella Romanos, the managing director of Plymouth studio Remode, has been nominated for the CWT everywoman in Technology Awards – an annual showcase of women succeeding in the technology sector.
Romanos told Deveop she was pleased to be nominated "not because I want to be treated any differently as a woman or because I have ever experienced any barriers to working in games, but because I hope it might encourage more women to consider it as a career".
"The industry is changing hugely and there is a lot of scope for innovation, so it's a really exciting time to be working in this industry," she added.
Maxine Benson, director of co-organiser everywoman, said the finalists were “inspirational women whose success comes from hard work in a male dominated sector”.
“These role models prove that there is a place for the future generation of career women in the industry,” she added.
Romanos will be hoping to pick up the Innovator of the Year award. Her competition for the top prize is Imperial College London’s Naomi Chayen – a professor of Biomedical Sciences – and Augure UK VP Leesa Fogarty.
Independent data suggests that, of 1.2 million UK people employed in the IT workforce, only 23 per cent are females.
Last year former Chancellor Alistair Darling visited Romanos at Remode to discuss games industry issues.
