GAMEFEST 08: Epic's engine scrutinised by Gearbox, Chair Entertainment and Midway
We've just posted up an extensive summary of an in-depth and illuminating session from this week's Microsoft Gamefest conference which examines why three very different companies are using Epic's Unreal Engine - and what changes they have had to make to the middlware to make it right for them.
Gearbox's Randy Pitchford, Chair's Geremy Mustard and Midway/Surreal Studio's Stuart Denman all speak openly about the reasoning for opting to use middleware and the lessons studios must learn when it comes to trusting a tools provider.
Epic Games' president Michael Capps also offers sage advice on why studios should trust their middleware vendor - pointing to historical precedent in a franchise like Deus Ex as an example of why buying an engine and then trying to rebuild it is a mistake.
