Founded in January of 2000, HandyGames is one of the oldest developers of mobile games still in existence today. The company started out as a developer of feature phone games and fully transitioned to exclusively developing games for modern smartphones and tablets in 2010.
When an initial foray into the“lite” and“full” version model didn’t yield the desired results, HandyGames looked for new ways to monetize their mobile games and became one of the first of the leading mobile games developers to wholly embrace an ad-supported business model.
In late September and early October 2011, HandyGames released Guns’n’Glory WW2 and Clouds&Sheep on the Android Market. The two games stormed the Top 10 lists in many important markets and garnered a combined total of almost 5 million downloads in the first 6 weeks since release. Both games are monetized with AdMob.
Mobile Games 2.0
AdMob is the most important source of ad revenue for HandyGames. Ad-supported games generate a constant revenue stream, which HandyGames complements through in-app purchases. In addition to that, HandyGames utilizes AdMob House Ads to cross-promote its large portfolio of free games.
Switching to a free and ad-supported games model has also enabled HandyGames to extend the“shelf life” of their mobiles games through content updates, which can be monetized easily with advertisements.
