TIGA Comments on GCSE results

Commenting on today’s GCSE results, TIGA, the trade association representing the UK video games industry, said the significant increase in entries for physics combined with a rise in the proportion of young people achieving A*-C grades at GCSE mathematics was encouraging.

However, the challenge to continue raising standards remains as over two-fifths of GCSE students again failed to get a good pass (A*-C) at GCSE mathematics.

Commenting on today’s GCSE exam results, Dr Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO, said:

“There are encouraging signs in this year’s results. The increase in the overall A*-C rate in GCSE mathematics from 58.4% in 2010 to 58.8% in 2011 as well as a 0.1% increase in the physics rate to 93.7% is a step in the right direction. Mathematics and physics are important core subjects for progression into some jobs in the video games industry.

“It is disappointing that again over 40% of students studying GCSE mathematics are not achieving a good pass. Whilst today’s GCSE results are generally positive, the Government must continue to focus on driving up standards, particularly in key subjects such as mathematics.”?
