The story behind the game
In December 2016 indie developer Byron Atkinson-Jones released a new game onto Steam and came down with the post-release blues that a lot of developers suffer from. The game in question had reached the top of the best sellers list for VR games but the blues just refused to go away and in fact got worse. 24th of December, the day before Christmas Day was when it all got too much and something had to be done. Byron decided to drag himself out of bed and forced himself to start to make a new game. It didn’t matter what it was just as long as he didn’t stop working, to use all that negative energy his mind was using to perpetuate and make the depression worse and turn it into something positive - therapy by distraction.
It worked. Byron kept this up for a few days over Christmas and eventually the game that would become Promethium was born. The depression wasn’t gone but Byron was able to keep it under control, to stop it crippling him by throwing all his energy into making the game.
Promethium was inspired by an old favourite game of Byron’s called Uridium with a bit of Nemesis/Gradius thrown in for good measure. It’s a retro inspired hard-core shooter that’s damn hard to beat, something that reflects the deep dark places that depression takes you and is hard to come back from.
The Promethium Armada is on it’s way to the Earth and it’s not a friendly visit. Founded on the business of dealing with and disposing of toxic waste, the Armada is ever on the watch for a new place to dump it and they have our planet in their sights.
In an attempt to save us all from impending toxic death, Commander Braybrook pilots
an experimental deep space tactical fighter and heads straight for the spearhead of the Promethium Armada. The fate of us all lies in her hands.
Promethium plays over 20 levels where the objective of the game is to defeat each of the ships of the Promethium Armada. To defeat the ships the player has to hack into them by flying their fighter over the sheld generator until they shut down. Once all the shields are down a kill command will be sent causing the Promethium Armada ship to self destruct.
Disabling the shields won't be easy though, they are guarded by many fighters, mines and turrets that are just itching to take the player down.
Byron will be showing Promethium off at the London MCM Comicon from the 26th of May and is looking forward to seeing people rise to the challenge of beating it.
Promethium will be coming to Steam very soon and hopefully to consoles some time later.
