MASTERTRONIC TRUMPETS THE CAUSE OF INDIE DEVELOPERS

Mastertronic Group has today announced that it is launching Great Indie Games which is a new label created specifically to bring Indie developed games to a wider audience. Mastertronic are confident that this label can advance the considerable retail potential of games that are high on gameplay and options for social networking and collaborative play.

Andy Payne, Managing Director of Mastertronic Group commented, “We have always wanted to work more closely with developers and we believe we can add real value to Indie games by getting them in front of a mainstream retail audience and shouting from the rooftops about the fruits of their considerable labour. With the many and varied PC games offerings out there, casual or otherwise, there is a place for great games that have been produced on a lower budget than normal by small development teams. Every other creative art has Indies, indeed the games industry grew out of Indie pioneers, so it is about time we helped them get back to where they belong. Great Indie Games is a vehicle to make this happen and I am proud to be representing this talent. We are on the look out for more Indie developed games so any developers who want their game sold at retail should get in touch with us.”

First on the Great Indie Games label will be the critically acclaimed and award winning World of Goo. Developed by renowned Indie developer 2D Boy and described as“Indie gaming’s‘finest hour and the best puzzle game since Lemmings” by PC Format, World of Goo scored a whopping 93%. Indeed Europe’s premier gaming site, Eurogamer heaped lavish praise on World of Goo reporting it to be,“A game so utterly charming, so pregnant with charisma, and so simple in concept, that it belongs in another era. An era when everyone got a little bit excited about video games...” 9/10.

Neil McKenna, who heads the publishing team at Mastertronic, added “I am really pleased that we have decided to put this marker down and build an Indie games label. At Mastertronic, we have always concentrated on bringing great value core PC games to a retail audience and this is a natural progression for us. There are a slew of‘pick up and play’ games on the market, some good, some not so good. World of Goo is simply fiendishly addictive and a game for everyone. I am sure that this will be a hit with our retail partners and consumers.”

World of Goo will launch in UK, Ireland, Australasia and Nordic territories in early July on PC and will be priced at?14.99 and€19.99 respectively.

About the Mastertronic Group Limited

Mastertronic is one of the best known electronic entertainment brands in Europe. It pioneered the European console market with its launch of the Sega Master System, invented the value retail sector and built an international development and publishing operation under the Virgin Mastertronic label. The brand was subsequently re-launched as The Mastertronic Group Limited in 2003 by founder Frank Herman, together with Andy Payne and Garry Williams. The Group now leads the European value publishing sector through its retail brands M.A.D. (Mastertronic Added Dimension), Sold Out (the UK's largest-selling budget operation, acquired by the Group in 2004) and PC Gamer Presents, a unique quality-assured brand in association with the leading games magazine publisher Future Publishing. The Group also offers, through its wholly owned subsidiary The Producers Limited (also acquired in 2004), a 'cradle to grave' total turnkey service for physical product, from marketing through packaging and warehousing, to retail and digital distribution. More recently in 2006, Blast Entertainment was launched as part of the group and has rapidly become a leading video game company exclusively aimed at the younger end of the Children’s market. Blast develops new content based on recognised family friendly licenses from films, TV, classic characters and toys and publishes on a variety of formats including PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. In 2007 Just Flight, and its sister company Just Trains, the leading worldwide simulation specialists, were acquired by the group. Just Flight was established in 1995, and within three years became the world’s largest publisher of flight simulation software outside of Microsoft, with a reputation for high quality products, published by genuine enthusiasts.
