After finishing Beat Hazard I wanted to take a break and do something different and a bit experimental.
I’ve always wanted to make a martial arts game. I love the mystique of the martial arts world and the legends and folk law that accompany it.
I wanted to create a different type of martial arts game where the player still had to react and think in real time, but one that also had elements of strategy and planning. A game where blocking and counter attacking were just as important as attacking. I also wanted to create something that was analogous to actually throwing a punch, or performing a block.
Martial Arts Brutality was the result and is a unique blend of tactical card combinations and time limited action sections when you need to use your reflexes and skill to trace on screen attacks, defences and counter attacks.
Banter and insults between opponents in martial arts films was a key element I wanted to include, so Martial Arts Brutally contains a novel ‘taunt’ system where players can trade insults during a fight. This coupled with the fight replay system gives you your own unique mini-story of your fight in graphic detail; with each punch, kick, block and counter attack, injuries sustained and the personal insults and banter.
I also wanted to include some of the rich and mysterious and legendary feats found in martial arts folk law. The Chi system allow players to perform these legendary techniques, from amazing shows of resilience, such as the Iron Shirt to the dark art of the Dim Mak death touch, a mysterious and subtle technique that causes fighters to collapse and die minutes or hours later after a strike.
In addition, I also wanted to tackle designing a Free 2 Play game. I’ve never attempted one before, but I like a challenge and to experiment with new gaming models.
About Cold Beam Games:
Beat Hazard Ultra
Martial Arts Brutality
Cold Beam Games is a one man studio operating out of the midlands in the UK. After working in big studios for 15 years I decided to go Indie 8 years ago. My first game, Beat Hazard, has been a big success. My second game, Martial Art Brutality, is currently nearing release.
I design and write all my own games. I’ve always been interested in creating games with a new twist or hook.
I had my first game published at the age of 14. It was called River Rally and sold about 500 copies on the Atari 800 in 1984.
Here is a list of the games that I’ve worked on: http://www.coldbeamgames.com/blog/games-ive-worked-on-part-1-game-history
I then worked for 15 years in the games industry for Digital Image Design, Rage, Warthog and THQ. In those jobs I haled positions from Programmer to Designer and Project Manager. The knowledge gained held me in good stead to go Indie after being made redundant from THQ in 2010.
