We’d like to introduce Kromaia, a unique renewal of the space shooter genre. Kromaia features a surprising blend between the arcade cabinet flavour and the total freedom of open world adventures. Face gigantic gods and hive minded creatures in a changing multiverse to be discovered and mastered.
We wanted to create a highly immersive story combining the old coin-op arcade feeling, the complex maneuverability of the six-degrees-of-freedom shooters, and the solitude of a lone protagonist exploring freely a huge, abandoned, yet hostile world to discover.
The story begins when a soul sealed in a machine awakes in front of a weird shrine. With the only guidance of a enigmatic inner voice and no memories of the surrounding world, it must learn how to control its mechanical armor while advancing in search for answers.
The immersive nature of the game relays greatly in a fully physics based universe to explore and interact with, and a navigation system providing extreme agility and allowing very high speeds through our special ‘boost’ mechanic. Also, we wanted to experiment with the feeling the player has when the machine he controls is not a vehicle, but the player’s body itself: it is the recipient which the main character, a soul, uses to travel freely; we think this idea reinforces immersion, helping the player to identify with a machine.
And it’s because its different nature that we see Kromaia as something not to be labelled simply as a ‘space shooter’, but a whole “alive” world in action, in which temples, asteroids, planets and their gravity fields, play a role telling a story as important as the enemy flocks, the bullet patterns, or the decisions made by the player himself.
