Iron Grip Universe: Walkers

Designed by Confederation scientists, walkers were developed for use in certain kinds of difficult terrain as an alternative to tanks. Making use of legs instead of tracks or wheels allows walkers to traverse very rough terrain (although slowly, and only with a skilled operator at the controls), while the raised position of the main body gives their crew and weapons a better view of the surrounding area. In the forests of eastern Fahrong, dense undergrowth could often leave tanks effectively blind, while walker crews could use their elevated position to see out across the foliage, and this was where walkers first proved their worth.

Many walkers were designed to offer excellent fields of view, and this made them popular in city battles during the Confederate invasion of Atelia, and the warlords there quickly learnt to fear walkers. Other leading nations (including Rahmos) realized the value of these unusual constructs and began developing their own walkers.

While early walkers were often slow and clumsy, the technology has come on in leaps and bounds, to the point where walkers are no longer limited to only the most advanced nations. Recently, a number of the more simple walkers have even been spotted in use by Marauder Captains.

Although they never did revolutionize warfare in the way that some people predicted they would, walkers have nonetheless become a valued component of most modern military forces.?
