Gaming is the new giving as Palringo online community raises more than $100,000 for charity

Palringo, the vastly popular community messaging and gaming app, has used its unique network of communities and the power of gamification to raise over $111,000 for charity Child’s Play.

Palringo was founded as a group messaging application and has quickly evolved into a community gaming platform that connects users with like-minded people around the world to chat, play games and build communities based on a wide variety of shared interests.

It generates the majority of its revenue from the purchase of virtual goods and games through the app, such as animated rich messages and ‘Bots’ which add new functionalities to groups. Users earn reputation and achievement badges by engaging with other users and building and growing new communities.

Palringo leveraged this dynamic by creating two free charity ‘Bots’ that could be added to groups and encouraged members to donate, rewarded donations with valuable recognition and challenged others to respond in kind.

This prompted an extraordinary response from the tight-knit online community who donated almost $15,000 on the first day, by encouraging each other to unlock different achievement levels and donate higher amounts. In doing so, they were incentivised to earn special reputation points – which form the life-blood of the Palringo community – by purchasing the charity message packs.

Daniela Schellenberg, a Palringo user who is now working at Palringo said: "Once the initial donations were made we saw the competitive dynamic kick in and this drove users to challenge each other to give within their communities and to challenge other communities. Our users are very competitive, and the extra dimension of feeling that the competition was in aid of a good cause really drove engagement."

The scale and speed by which the Bots and rich messages were used reflects the instantaneous nature and engagement of Palringo as a messaging platform. Groups can have up to 2,000 members, providing an immediate, conversational experience.

Child’s Play is a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children having hospital care, by providing them with toys and games in in a network of more than 70 hospitals worldwide.
