Industry Supergroup Reveals Inaugural Project Sinister Dexter, Spiritual Successor to Pen-and-Paper Classic Spellbinder
SEATTLE, WA – February 27, 2014 – Industry veterans Avery Alix, Eric Olson and Christopher Langmuir announce “collaborative cloud” mobile development team dubbed Fixer Studios. The newly formed company hopes to make big waves in late spring with its first title Sinister Dexter , currently in development for iOS and Android devices.
Fixer Studios is a “collaborative cloud” studio driven by a constantly fluctuating workforce of veteran volunteers dedicated to creating top-rated mobile titles. Team members have been assembled by tapping into a vast network of talent from around the globe, spearheaded by former PopCap Games manager Avery Alix. On average the team clocks in at just over thirty members, but that number is a constantly changing metric. Fixer Studios utilizes a dynamic staffing system to manage production, wherein members are able to join and scale their scope of work based on availability, interest and expertise. As members drop off or jump onto the project, team leads carefully delegate, assess and re-assign mission critical activities to keep development on track.
Inspired by the indie game-jam spirit, members of Fixer Studios are encouraged to participate in every facet of development, regardless of their official discipline or role within the company. With this model, developers are able to share new perspectives and ideas for the betterment of the project. Unlike most businesses, Fixer Studios is project-driven instead of profit-driven. The studio’s mission is to develop and launch top-rated mobile titles that both intrigue and inspire the team. Being self-funded and working within a boostrap model, the team is able to experiment freely with less overall risk than traditional developer structure. Fixer Studios’ first project, Sinister Dexter, builds on a proven multiplayer model pioneered by Dr. Richard Bartle, co-creator of the original Multi-User Dungeon (MUD1). Combined with the accessibility and connectivity of mobile platforms, Sinister Dexter is poised to become the definitive Spellbinder experience for a new digital age.
In Sinister Dexter, wizards engage in one-on-one turn-based duels where strategy and foresight are key to emerging victorious. Players choose choreographed recipes of hand gestures culled from their spellbook to cast powerful magic on their opponents. Each turn, players carefully choose the specific order of hand gestures needed to cast their desired spell. A turn-based system makes every battle a game of mystical chess, with players vying to stay a step ahead of one another. Through gameplay, players gain experience and unlock new characters, equipment and customization options to unleash on their astral-garbed adversaries. Sinister Dexter is the spiritual successor to Spellbinder a classic pen-and-paper game developed by gaming pioneer Dr. Richard Bartle over 30 years ago. Known as the co-creator of the first Multi-User Dungeon, Dr. Bartle has conducted extensive research on player conduct and interaction through massively multiplayer online games. Dr. Bartle is a key advisor for the team offering his expertise not only on the content and spirit of Spellbinder, but also in helping to refine the overall player experience.
