Data Realms Releases Major Update To Cortex Command After Accidental Disastrous Game Launch

April 17th, 2014 - Phoenix, AZ - Data Realms released an update for their debut game Cortex Command for the first time after a disastrous miscommunication between the developer and the games press over a year and a half ago. The previously unannounced major pre-release update to the ambitious action RTS adds a game-changing squad control system, heavily improved AI and support for Steam functionality, including achievements and Steam Workshop integration.
After having sold the slowly evolving game directly through their own website for nearly a decade, Data Realms opted to release Cortex Command on Steam in September 2012. The Steam release was was dubbed "1.0" to celebrate the addition of an early version of the metagame campaign mode. The "1.0" nomer caused many prominent press outlets and gamers to wrongly assume the build was the final release. The miscommunication led to numerous scathing reviews of what was effectively a work-in-progress version of the game, demotivating the developer from continuing the project.
Supported by pleas from the Cortex Command community to keep improving the game, Dan continued to push on. He decided to provide several of the most prolific and competent Cortex Command modders with access to the full game source. Since, the modding community has supported Data Realms in fulfilling the potential of the original project, culminating in the long-awaited update of the game.
"When I originally created Cortex Command I wanted to completely build it on my own, and the modding tools were designed to make development easier on myself", says Dan Tabar, "now I realize that what I built sets a direction, allowing all these talented and passionate individuals to riff on what was already there. Seeing the community rally behind the vision of the game and using the tools I created to turn the real potential of Cortex Command into a reality is a great feeling."
Cortex Command is a game 12 years in the making. It began life as a personal project by Data Realms founder Dan Tabar while he was still in high school. Dan envisioned a game with real-time tactical battles featuring pixel-detail physics, and a turn-based metagame which gives context and history to the battles repeatedly fought on increasingly battle-scarred sites. Over the years, Cortex Command was built with physics-driven sandbox gameplay and ease of modifications in mind, which fostered a strong fan community around the slowly improving game.
