Computer games‘should fire children’s imaginations’

Computer games should inspire children to play and create in the real world, according to a Scottish company launching its first game for iPad and iPhone.

Paper Zoo is described as“origami meets Tamagotchi” by its Dundee-based creators Stormcloud Games.

The game encourages children to fold and care for origami animals on an iPad or iPhone, and by playing Paper Zoo they will learn how to make the animals in real life.

The team want to inspire children to then create their own paper zoo at home– and are inviting parents to share pictures of their kids’ creativity on Facebook and Twitter.

Paper Zoo has been developed with the support of the University of Abertay Dundee’s Prototype Fund, which invests up to?25,000 in small companies based anywhere in the UK looking to create new games and build a sustainable business.

Frank Arnot from Stormcloud Games said:“With Paper Zoo we want to inspire children to learn how to make origami, and to create their own collections of paper animals at home.

“Computer games should fire children’s imaginations, giving them the ideas and the creative confidence to play and create in the real world.

“We’re really inspired by games like Skylanders which mix playing in the real world with playing in a game, but with Paper Zoo we wanted to create a similar experience but make it more accessible and more affordable.

“For the price of a kids' magazine– and with no additional charges for extra items– we’re bringing together a fun, family-friendly game with accurate origami designs created by Japanese origami expert Mr Fumiaki Shingu.”

Paul Durrant, Director of Business Development at Abertay University, said:“The Abertay University Prototype Fund is delighted to see Paper Zoo being launched by such a talented team.

“There’s huge demand for high-quality children’s games with no hidden costs for in-app purchases, and this game is a great example of how experienced game developers are now looking at new business models and new markets.

“By providing a creative experience beyond the game itself, Paper Zoo is offering something many parents are calling out for– engaging, enjoyable games that inspire kids to be more creative, folding and painting their way to a paper animal collection.”

Stormcloud Games is led by Frank Arnot, Pat McGovern and Andy West, who between them have over 50 years’ game development experience and have shipped over 45 titles on a huge variety of platforms.

Before founding their company, members of the team worked on multiple hit projects including Minecraft for Xbox Live Arcade, the F1 and Happy Potter series, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Medal of Honor Rising Sun.

Paper Zoo is now available worldwide for iPad, iPhone and iPod in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.????
