Those familiar with WipEout on Sony PlayStation or older Psygnosis titles from the 80s and 90s will probably have heard of CoLD SToRAGE or Tim Wright. Anyone who used MUSICtm or MTV Music Generator will likewise be familiar with the same person.
Over the past 20 years, Wright has been prolific both in terms of composing music for many memorable games, and also in terms of designing and authoring music sequencing software for use on games consoles and home PCs.
In recent months Wright has been working on redeveloping his CoLD SToRAGE website. This has included a complete overhaul in terms of logo & style, as well as bringing back all of his music under one roof. This re-development process has given him time to reflect upon his entire musical repertoire, and led him to think the time was right for some kind of compilation release. Not the kind of thing you might expect of course, where tracks are cherry picked and simply re-packaged. The new CoLD SToRAGE album is shipped on a gold 16Gb USB stick, contains a personalised message and is packaged in a secure box. But more importantly contains more material than you'd expect...
“While we've been rebuilding the CoLD SToRAGE website, I've had chance to listen to pretty much all my musical output over the past 20 years. It seemed a good point to release some kind of 'best of' album. But then, how do you choose which tracks to include?
In discussion with friends and family someone suggested, 'why don't you just put EVERYTHING on the album?'. At first that sounded ridiculous! But given that the concept of having a finite amount of space on a CD or Vinyl album is a thing of the past, the advent of digital download and USB storage meant it wasn't such a silly idea after all - so, that's pretty much what I've done.
I've taken most of my albums, singles, EPs from the past 10 years or so and put them all onto one 16Gb memory stick. I've added some side projects and a bunch of unreleased tracks too. In total that means we have 13 Albums, 11 Single and other material which takes it up to 216 tracks all told. That's around 10-12 hours of CoLD SToRAGE, which should keep anyone busy for a while!”
