SHEPHERDSTOWN, August 14, 2014 -- Animal Gods, a game about exploring the ancient roots of European history, is now on Kickstarter. The game features massive 2D side-scrolling battles in the wonderfully colorful & beautifully ravaged setting of Ancient Europe.
The idea for Animal Gods started with the creating the world and adding mystery. Ancient Europe, with its stone megaliths, is curious yet familiar place that is not often explored in a video games.
“Soundscapes and music are key in telling a very old, ancient story” says Peter Harmon, “often, when I play games, I end up muting the sound because it just doesn’t work with the flow of the gameplay experience.”
Still Games went to Michael Rasbury, University of Virginia’s professor of sound design, for sound resources that sets the stage in a way unique to video games.
The game has been on Kickstarter for about 24 hours and has received positive feedback from its backers and the online community. Reviews and private messages have complimented the story, which is less detail-intensive than other stories featured on Kickstarter.
Kara Myren, who helped craft these parts says, “We focused on creating a story that felt old, but avoided fictional lore. We made two rules: no inventing new words and keep the speech simple.” The game takes place during the Bronze Age, exploring a time of mysterious artifacts that predates written history.
Kara continues: “Current conjecture hypothesizes that Stonehenge was built as a reference for observing the movement of the stars, and we’re expanding with these astrological ideas, using voices to create an atmosphere rather than simply relay information.”
The studio has received questions about the game play, asking to see more of it. Although the trailer does not feature an animated sprite, it features a cinematic exploration and animation style for the game. Exploration in Animal Gods can be compared most easily to Capybara’s Below. Core action game play will be similar to titles like Megaman X and Super Castelvania IV but the exploration of Ancient Europe is the key, unique aspect of the world of Animal Gods.

“Please support!” adds Kara Myren, “we need a web of support to fund the project, and every bit helps. Thank you!”
