A new visual novel format is coming from Italy

The most funded Italian videogame on Kickstarter

p>Milan, 12/21/2017 | With 33,347€, 1186 backers and an overall 133% of the goal sum, The Ballad Singer is the most funded Italian videogame in the history of Kickstarter.

Curtel Games has decided to unlock the third stretch goal for the backers of the project, including further narrative developments as free additional content which will be available later on, after the videogame’s release. With the current funding, TBS will be released in November 2018, for Windows and Mac, fully narrated in Italian and English.

Given the success the game has reaped on Kickstarter, the campaign will continue on Indiegogo InDemand, to allow backers to unlock further Stretch Goals and achieve more funding for development. All Kickstarter backers will receive benefits from any eventual Stretch Goals achieved on Indiegogo.

Riccardo Bandera, the creator of TBS, is particularly satisfied by the result: "Achieving this goal has been extremely important to us, and we are sure this can be a great start for crowdfunding in Italy's gaming scenery. We are used to see project reach hundreds of thousands of Euro on Kickstarter, but never for Italian projects. One of our objectives is to export the artistic value of The Ballad Singer abroad, so that Italy may begin to show its passion for art, quality, and innovation in the videogame industry.

For anyone who hasn't heard it yet, TBS is a 2D animated adventure, which takes inspiration from vintage book-games and is heavily influenced by role playing games.

The goal of the development team is to let players live an engaging experience, halfway through reading a book and portraying several characters within a world that reacts to their own choices.

A particularly interesting feature is that the game will be completely narrated both in Italian and in English. According to Curtel Games, this characteristic will noticeably help players engage, allowing them to follow along the narrative path, without having to read the over 350,000 words which make up the videogame.

The structure of the game spreads like a huge tree, where every player's choice doesn't just affect the current storyline but also those of other playable characters and the whole world of The Ballad Singer altogether.

This new title introduces several new game-play mechanics. The concept of "Game Over" has been revised. Upon the death of one of the heroes, the adventure won't simply be over, the experience will continue with another character, in an environment which has been heavily influenced by the previous hero, not just for the choices which have been taken, the effects the death has caused will also be taken into account through the whole the gaming world.

TBS has been thought to be played through several times, as each campaign will allow players to reach up to 4 endings (one per character), out of the 40 different ones. All this going through 10 chapters and hundreds of narrative branches, completely narrated and illustrated.

The development team is focusing a great deal on the artistic side of the project. As a matter of fact, particular attention is being placed on the narrative developments, on the artwork, and on the modular music system, which will be adapted based on the different situations, environments, and characters in play.

The Ballad Singer is a narrated experience, designed by Riccardo Bandera. The story is set in one of the fantasy universes created by the writer Alberto De Stefano, and takes shape through the artwork of Federico Musetti. The gameplay mechanics are based on the understanding of the narrative background and on the player's ability to empathize with the character. Each choice throughout the adventure is fundamental, and all decision branches are complete, i.e. fully illustrated and narrated. There is no "main" narrative branch, the player shapes each different game. A rash decision will often lead to the character's death, or will make the situation escalate, this is why The Ballad Singer is, to all intents, an adventure that tests players, forcing them to think over each circumstance.

The main feature of this title is the elevated quantity of choices, this is a true and proper book, narrated and illustrated at high resolution, where the players write their own plot, through their decisions.

The Ballad Singer means to provide an experience merging elements from RPGs, game books and visual novels, in a new format.

Curtel Games is an Italian software house, funded in 2017 by Riccardo and Edoardo Bandera. Their goal is to create games with high quality artistic contents and innovative mechanics.
