NINTENDO 3DS XL HOSTS FAMILY SPACE AT FRIEZE LONDON 2012
NINTENDO 3DS XL is excited to announce an Autumn programme of events and creative partnerships, bringing to life the release of New Art Academy: Learn New Painting Techniques and Share Your Art – the new edition of the hugely popular title by Nintendo, jam-packed with creative lessons which will have you painting and drawing your own masterpieces and sharing them with your friends and family in no time.
ART LESSONS: Nintendo 3DS XL is working with high profile artists to create bespoke, digital lessons for New ArtAcademy, teaching people how to re-create some of their best-known images using the Nintendo 3DS console. John Myatt – best known as the original convicted art forger come good, who forged and sold some of the world’s most famous masterpieces– will offer step-by-step lessons to re-create iconic paintings such as Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Monet’s Sunset over San Marco .
Acclaimed children’s book artists Jan Pienkoswi ( Haunted House, MEG&MOG), Oliver Jeffers ( The Moose Belongs to Me, Lost and Found, The Incredible Book Eating Boy) and Viviane Schwarz ( There Are No Cats in this Book) will also each create a number of lessons for New Art Academy, teaching users how to draw new creations, as well as some of their best known characters from their combined array of award-winning and much-loved picture books.
WORKSHOPS&EVENTS: In addition to the digital lessons, John Myatt and Viviane Schwarz will host free live workshops inLondon later this Autumn, teaching audiences techniques and tips in person.
Following a workshop in Birmingham to coincide with ‘Provenance’, a retrospective of over 70 of his best-known works and new original paintings, at Waterhall, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (29 Sept– 14 Oct), John Myatt will also host special drawing event in London at Cass Art, Islington, on Monday 5 November, 7 - 9pm.
Viviane Schwarz recently hosted a workshop as part of Nintendo’s NewArtAcademy space at The Campaign For Drawing 2012’s national launch, Big Draw, Big Make, and will present a second event at Cass Art, on Friday 2 November from 3 - 5pm.
In addition to the artist lessons, Nintendo 3DS XL also supported the Family Space at Frieze London 2012, which took place from 11– 14 October in Regent’s Park, and offered the opportunity to try out New Art Academy daily at the art fair, together with workshops and creative inspiration for art-making, presented in partnership with ReachOut RCA.

ARTIST BIOGS:
JOHN MYATT
Famed for his part in the most ingenious art con of the 20 th century, John Myatt is critically acclaimed the world over as the‘convicted art forger made good’ who created and sold‘genuine fakes’ of the world’s most sought after masterpieces. With a prison sentence, a popular Sky Arts series and a movie in the pipeline all painting the picture of his colourful life, Myatt’s career as a‘genuine faker’ started in 1986 when he placed an advert in Private Eye offering genuine‘19 th and 20 th century fakes for£200’. Professor John Drewe, a man claiming to be a nuclear physicist, commissioned Myatt to produce a number of paintings, which he later had valued at Christie’s in London for£25,000. The pair went into business together, passing off 200 more fakes over seven years, which were later sold through leading auction houses in London and New York. Both were convicted of fraud and Myatt was sentenced to 12 months in Brixton prison, serving just six months before he was released in June 1999 on good behaviour, with a ready-and-waiting client base, all eager to buy a piece of art from the likeable man behind one of the biggest art frauds of the 20 th century. These days Myatt’s legitimate fakes may be signed‘Monet’ but are clearly marked‘John Myatt: Genuine Fakes’ on the reverse.
JAN PIENKOWSKI
Jan Pienkowski is a Polish-born British illustrator and author of children's books. He is best known for illustrating the children’s book series, Meg&Mog, written by Helen Nicholl. He is also a pioneer of the pop-up picture book and distinct silhouette style. His pop-up book, Haunted House, won him his second Kate Greenaway Medal, the coveted award for children’s book illustration. Pienkowski has had a lifelong interest in stage design and has been commissioned to design productions including Theatre de Complicite’s production of Beauty and the Beast for the Royal Ballet, and Sleeping Beauty at Disneyland Paris.
OLIVER JEFFERS
Oliver Jeffers is an artist, illustrator and writer from Belfast, Northern Ireland and now lives and works in Brooklyn. From figurative painting and installation, to illustration and picture-book making, his work has been exhibited in New York, Dublin, London, Sydney, WashingtonDC, and Belfast. He is widely known for his picture books for children, published by HarperCollins UK and Penguin US. How to Catch a Star debuted in 2004 to critical acclaim, and Lost and Found(2005), won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Gold Medal 2006, the Blue Peter Book Award 2006 and was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal the same year. Other well-known books include The Incredible Book Eating Boy (2007), which won the Irish Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year, The Way Back Home (2007) and The Great Paper Caper (2008). In 2007, Jeffers was the official World Book Day Illustrator. His most recent book, This Moose Belongs to Me, is out now.
VIVIANE SCHWARZ
Born in Germany, Viviane Schwarz gained her illustration BA and MA at Falmouth College of Arts, and is best known for her children’s books, published by Walker Books. There are Cats in this Book, was shortlisted for the 2010 Cilip Greenaway award for best illustrated book, and the sequel, There are No Cats in this Book, was shortlisted in 2012. She has also been shortlisted and highly commended for the V&A illustration award, the 2011 Booktrust Best New Illustrators Award and the 2011 Roald Dahl Funny Award. Her other books include Timothy And The Strong Pajamas, The Adventures of a Nose and Shark and Lobster's Amazing Undersea Adventure. Her latest projects are a collaboration with writer Alexis Deacon, including A Place to Call Home. Her first graphic novel, The Sleepwalkers, will be published by Walker Books in April 2013.
ABOUT NEW ART ACADEMY
Jam-packed with 32 brand-new lessons, New Art Academy is the follow up to Nintendo’s Art Academy. It features both Introductory and Advanced lessons - whether you are an old master or a complete novice - offering easy to follow, step-by-step guides to a variety of drawing and painting techniques, styles and materials.
