(N.B. The monthly games chart is based on titles released and reviewed in the last month. The apps chart is based on titles reviewed over the last three months. Hence, this is not a cumulative chart and earlier released titles may have higher scores.)
Given Illusion Labs's Blast-A-Way mixes head-scratching logical puzzles with a gorgeous 3D world and plenty of explosives, it's easy to see why it tops the iPhone Qi game chart for August 2012. It's had some stiff competition, mind, from the likes of Mikey Shorts, a charming retro-inspired platformer that challenges you to complete each stage as quickly as possible. Ninth-placed epic adventure game Horn has also proved a big hit over the past four weeks, thanks to a beautiful Zelda-inspired 3D fantasy world and a rip-roaring plot. Just behind it, Organ Trail: Director's Cut takes a completely different approach to excellence, with a retroer-than-retro art style and darkly humorous survival sim gameplay.
It's been a strong month for apps, too, with Broadcast for Friends taking the #1 spot primarily due to its innovative ability to stream live video to your Facebook page. Fans of Anthony Kiedis's band will be glad to hear that Red Hot Chili Peppers Official has performed admirably of late, rising up to #6 on this month's hit parade. With its potent SoCal blend of photos, tour dates, and merchandise, it was always likely to go platinum. (Or something.) Meanwhile, further down the apps leaderboard, Videokits guides you through the process of shooting high-quality videos via handy step-by-step guides and useful advice. For all you back-to-schoolers, however, Fingertips Maths props up the August chart with its roster of easy-to-remember arithmetic techniques. Count us in! Cough.
We'll continue to provide an updated listing each and every month, together with a round-up of the year. For all the up-to-date information on which iPhone games, apps, and publishers are reviewing best, head on over to the iPhone Quality Index now.
