86 games created during Global Game Jam in the Netherlands

Most promising games to be displayed at "game auction" in Amsterdam

The Netherlands has seen a very fruitful edition of the Global Game Jam, with 86 new games created by over 500 professional game developers, students, hobbyists and journalists in 5 locations. Among the games are several highly original concepts that need to be seen (or played!) to be believed.

At the location of the International Game Architecture and Design school in the town of Breda the most striking game was RU-PAM, created by freshmen and sophomores. Two players -who can’t see each other- control one sniper, having to shoot down abstract targets in the distance. One player controls the scope while the other one, holding a Playstation Move controller, pulls the trigger whenever there’s a rumble indicating the right target is in sight. A glowing green light on top of the controller means a clear line of fire.

Another striking concept is Heart to Get, concocted at the Utrecht School of the Arts, where the creators use the MaKey MaKey invention set to control a game using a pair of kidneys (non-human, obviously).

More conventional, but no less inspiring results were achieved in Amsterdam with B-Minus 50, a game in which players have exactly 50 heart beats to reach a high enough location. This game was co-developed with people from Silverfit, a company specialised in using game technology for rehabilitation and physiotherapy. Other notable games include Folium, Robocaust Z, Dawn, Celestia and Wob Wob, the latter one made by professional developer Codeglue.

The best results from?the Dutch Global Game Jam will be displayed in venue Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam, February 19 th. Creators get to auction their concept off to publishers and other business contacts, or pitch their game in order to secure a publishing deal or funding.
