Dare to be Digital 2012 team Mad Rocket Games talk exclusively to Develop about working on their entry title Ready, Steady, Roll!
Our game is called Ready, Steady, Roll! It’s a four player racing game for Android tablets. The concept is based around gaining mass to build up momentum. You must choose one of the ‘Makers & Bakers’, an alien race whose main goal is to build a galaxy – a galaxy made from giant cake planets.
Your alien stands atop a cake ball and you must roll it down the outside of a giant slalom-style tubular track. The objective is to collect smaller cake ingredients and confectionaries to gain mass and avoid larger ones to form the planet for the eventual orbit around the sun.
The concept draws many influences from the likes of Katamari Damacy, Super Monkey Ball and Mario Kart.
Intense, exhausting and extremely fun! We all love what we do and Dare gives us the opportunity to do just that: making games. We’ve all been involved in small projects alongside university coursework, so it’s great to dedicate all of our time and resources on a singular project.
We’ve met many experienced developers from different studios around the UK who have each given us great advice and things to consider during development.
Overall, even though stress is high and the under-eye bags have now become suitcases, we have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would do it all again!
We have learnt a lot more about how each discipline works within the team and how quickly aspects of the game can be achieved.
We’ve also been able to develop, employ and learn new techniques that enable us to have a quick workflow for various aspects of the game; a necessity for such a short development time.
Each of us has also acquired new skills and knowledge which will certainly help us with future projects and university coursework.
As Abertay University students, we have been well aware of Dare and ProtoPlay over the years and we all aspired to be a part of the madness since hearing about it.
We know that come ProtoPlay we will have our prototype finished and we’re all extremely eager to see people playing our game – and hopefully enjoying it as much as we have developing it.
Firstly we want to release our game. It will require more work post-Dare to include more tracks and possibly some rework based on feedback from ProtoPlay. Four of us still have a year left at university so once the game is released, that’s the priority focus.
We are all extremely hungry to work in the industry and we would all like to continue making games before our time’s up at uni.
If some job opportunities do arise post-Dare, I’m sure many members of the team will find it very difficult to say no. William, one of our artists, has finished his course of study and so he’s hoping to find some work post-Dare.
