Transactions to be based on real regional currency by end of year

Microsoft is to phase out its virtual currency system by the end of the year, according to reports.

According to Inside Mobile Apps, the console giant will be ditching Microsoft points from Xbox Live, Windows Phone and Zune marketplace.

Virtual currency will be replaced by real money transactions based on regional pricing, bringing it in line with other app stores and Sony’s PSN.

Developers are reportedly being briefed on the plan so they can make any necessary changes to future DLC pricing.

Microsoft currently uses a hybrid system for online payments, with points used to purchase DLC whilst full games are listed in dollars.

The console giant has been criticised for using a virtual currency, with some customers claiming confusion and stating they have to purchase more points than may be necessary.
