Fries defends $99 Android console and its new business model
Ed Fries has spoken out against criticisms of Ouya, which has been met with noticeable dismissal since its launch this summer.
In a guest post on VentureBeat, the original Xbox team member, now an advisor for Ouya, defended the system and its slow start, saying it is being judged using out-dated metrics that don’t apply to a new system with a new business model.
“Among the criticisms is that ‘only’ one out of three Ouya owners have purchased at least one game,” wrote Fries.
“While the folks at Ouya are incredibly proud of this early outcome, some have chosen to interpret this as a glass that’s two-thirds empty.”
Fries claimed that it is “impossible” to tell if that conclusion is appropriate yet because shifts in gaming toward open distribution models are upsetting the entire business and what works in unpredictable ways.
“Just as there was no way to compare Minecraft with World of Warcraft three years ago, today it is nearly impossible to compare Ouya with the next-generation consoles set to debut this year,” he added.
“This is because the game has changed dramatically for the interactive entertainment industry – and so have the rules.”
Although Fries admitted he did not know what form would take in this vastly different industry, he emphasised that Ouya is an open console with the ability “to evolve as needed”.
