Analytics site also claims shooters earn more per user than MOBAs

World of Tanks claimed more average revenue per user than any other online game in the last 12 months, according to a new research.

The report by SuperData ranks Wargaming's popular free-to-play warfare game at the top of a chart that includes major hitters such as League of Legends, DOTA 2 and Guild Wars 2.

World of Tanks average revenue per users (ARPU) is pinned at $4.51, just ahead of Valve's Team Fortress 2 on $4.36.

By contrast, League of Legend is earning $1.32 on average per user, less than half what the average World of Tanks user spends.

However, as the report points out, League of Legends is almost five times the size of World of Tanks user base.

“There’s World of Tanks, which has a monthly active user base of around 9.1 million and makes $4.51 per month per user. And there’s League of Legends, with 58.5 million average monthly actives over the past twelve months, and a $1.32 spend per user. Five times the audience, but less than third of the earnings per player,” SuperData explained.

From its research, SuperData also concluded that shooters earn more per user than MOBAs. And many of the top most earners in its chart, which included War Thunder, a relatively new contender in the MMO space, are shooters.

It did acknowledge, though, that that average revenue per use can “vary drastically, even within a single game’s user base”. It said successful titles are those that develop and localise their game to accommodate specific markets and ones that focus on user experience first, not revenue.
