E3 2011: Ubisoft reveals Nintendo's plans to revamp online communities in games

Wii U ‘axes friend codes for Xbox Live experience’

Ubisoft producer Adrian Blunt has said that the days of Nintendo’s unpopular online friend codes are over.

Speaking to MTV at E3, Blunt made the revelation while demonstrating Ghost Recon Online, one of several Ubisoft games unveiled for the new Wii U console.

Asked why he thought the game was viable as an online experience, Blunt answered: “There’s a few things on that. The first is the ability for individuals to make accounts. Rather than a machine having an account, each individual user has an account."

When questioned as to if this meant the end of the 12 character randomised friend codes to be replaced by Xbox Live-esque gamertags, Blunt said: “Yeah, exactly.”

“Rather than using friend codes, which we’ve had in the past, we’re able to connect players in a much easier way, which allows us to have a community that’s playing together in the game."
