Crowd-funded project raises more than three times its initial $900k target

Brian Fargo’s Wasteland 2 Kickstarter campaign has ended, raising $2.9 million for the project.

The crowd-funding initiative for the InXile game, which began just over a month ago, garnered 61,288 backers, with 12 of the contributors pledging $10,000 or more to the title.

The project, a sequel to post-apocalyptic RPG Wasteland released in 1988, made nearly $600,000 in just 24 hours after it started, and carried on the momentum throughout.

The huge success of the Kickstarter campaign has meant that Obsidian will now join the game’s development, after it surpassed the $2.1 million landmark to make the partnership possible.

It is unclear however if mod support will be added, as Fargo said that the studio would include it only after the game had shipped if the campaign reached $3 million.

The barnstorming triumph of Wasteland 2 on Kickstarter brings it close to Tim Schafer and Double Fine’s campaign for a new adventure game, which brought in an astounding $3.3 million from 87,142 backers.
