Label aiming to help third party developers with the move to free-to-play

Wargaming launches Wargaming Alliance publishing label with Total War: Arena as first release

Wargaming have launched a new publishing label, Wargaming Alliance, a third party publishing label that plays to Wargaming’s strengths, aiming to give developers the tools and resources to get into free-to-play gaming.

Today, in addition to announced the newly created publishing label, they’re announcing their partnership with SEGA and Creative Assembly to publish Total War: Arena as their first title.

“SEGA is constantly exploring ways in which its diverse range of IPs can be brought to a wider gaming audience,” said Jurgen Post, President and COO at SEGA Europe, in an emailed statement. “This strategic partnership with Wargaming, to release Total War: Arena as the first game on the Wargaming Alliance platform, presents a unique opportunity for Creative Assembly’s eagerly anticipated creation to realize its full potential. Working with Wargaming, a market leader in the free-to-play space, and by utilizing their extensive experience and expertise in this area, SEGA is confident that Total War: Arena will become the worldwide hit it deserves to be.”

Arena focusses on 10 v 10 battles in the Total War franchises usual method, although the scale is much smaller for each player as they are limited to three units each, with a maximum of 100 men per unit.

“For the past seven years, Wargaming has worked hard to establish itself as an industry leader in publishing games within the free-to-play area,” said Vladimir Makarychev, Head of Wargaming Alliance. “Through the Wargaming Alliance label we hope to share our knowledge with other companies entering this highly competitive landscape and are extremely excited to partner with SEGA and Creative Assembly to ensure Total War: Arena is a resounding success.”

This could be a good move for Wargaming, best known for their successes with free to play tank battler World of Tanks.
