Gaijin Entertainment has integrated cross-platform play into its free-to-play military MMO War Thunder on PS4.
This means console users can now play alongside or against existing PC and Mac players on the same server, despite the unique control schemes between versions.
War Thunder is the second PS4 title to offer cross-platform multiplayer after the release of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn last month.
Sony’s decision to allow cross-platform play on the PS4 marks a change in tack for consoles, which have traditionally been perceived as closed systems. Though it has been implemented occasionally in the past, most notably in CCP’s PS3 title Dust 514, actions in which directly affected Eve Online, most multiplayer games have usually been restricted to single-system multiplayer.
