Steam giant takes on high school interns as it experiments with training young developers

Valve opens student developer website Pipeline

Valve has launched a website for student developers to help them learn about working in the game industry.

The site is being run by a group of high school interns currently working at the Steam giant, who will discuss their experiences during the months ahead.

The page will eventually feature developer interviews, tutorials and a forum where students can debate topics and learn about getting into games. Valve said the information covered will largely be determined by the questions young developers submit.

Pipeline is also being used as an experiment by Valve to see whether young students can be trained up at the company and become full employees, after admitting it traditionally hires experienced developers.

“Pipeline has been introduced to see how a group of younger employees functions at a company like Valve,” said video creator and editor Nathaniel

“Valve has been known to mainly employ very experienced individuals, and this is pretty much a test to see how a group of younger employees can adapt to the work structure.”

Jordan, a web artist, added: “On the full website we’ll have the forum set up which will allow members to take part in discussions being passed round the greater community. We want our experiences to be open and useful for you to understand how we’re adapting into the industry as a whole.”
