Unity3D adds iPhone support

Game engine to target promising gaming platform

Unity Technologies, the Copenhagen-based developer of the Unity game engine, has announced that its engine will soon support development and deployment of games to the iPhone.

According to Pocket Gamer, the engine will fully support the OpenGL hardware acceleration present in the iPhone, and will add new input APIs to give developers full access to the multi-touch screen and accelerometer.

"With iPhone support, Unity is poised to become the single source for game developers who want to create best-of-breed, 3D-quality games that can be easily and quickly ported to all platforms, including consoles, devices, PC/Mac, and now, the iPhone," said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies.

"Specifically, Unity's support of iPhone addresses the developer's need to create more and better mobile/portable games that support the consumers 'on-the-go' lifestyle."

The Unity engine is designed to make games that can run either from the desktop or within browser windows, but its editing suite is currently only Mac compatible. The company has stated previously that it is working on a Windows version, but that its small team size will make progress slow.
