UK studio Supermassive opts for Gamebryo

New project to use the tech for a third time

Gamebryo has been licensed by a new UK studio partner, just months after the future of the engine was thrown into disarray.

Guildford-based independent outfit Supermassive Games will develop its newest title using Gamebyro.

A spokesperson for Gamebase has said the move represents a brand new licensing deal for Supermassive.

Supermassive used the Gamebryo Engine for development on two previous projects; Start the Party and Tumble.

Gamebryo assets were sold to the highest bidder in what resembled a fire-sale at the end of 2010. The tech was purchased by Korean firm Gamebase.

Its old owners Emergent had been struck with money problems. After the Gamebryo sale, Emergent CEO Scott Johnson was replaced by David Brame.

Harvey Wheaton, studio director at Supermassive Games, said the studio chose Gamebryo because of the “strong relationship we have built with the Gamebryo team over the last two years.”

It is unknown how many of the Emergent team are working for Gamebase.
