THQ has pushed the release of South Park: The Stick of Truth until outside fiscal year 2013.
The RPG is set in the world of the hit animated comedy, and though there have been South Park games before, this is the first to have series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker on board.
This major blow to fans and investors alike was dealt at today’s THQ earnings call when company president Jason Rubin revealed that all titles for Q4 2013 had been delayed, saying the games needed more time for polish.
It was not said when Metro Last Light and Company of Heroes 2 would be released.
"The opportunity for South Park is massive," said Rubin.
"It is one of the most anticipated titles of calendar 13, and it richly deserves the anticipation. I believe the sheer size of the game, which is comparable to multiple seasons of show, and the incredible dedication and high standards of the creators, will make the title worth the wait."
It is unclear what effect this will have on the company in the long term but investors seem to have taken Rubin’s warning of "additional risk" well, as stocks closed with a gain of 16 cents.
This could be a market fluke, but the company has shown considerable courage in delaying revenues in order to make every game count.
Rubin’s faith this gamble will pay off with the release of South Park is evident, and his voice took a brighter tone as he spoke of his experience with the project.
"I can personally say I have had more laugh out loud moments in the past few months than in my entire game career to date," he said.
