Platform built on Lua will be a “significant step up” from games such as The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones

Telltale overhauling in-house Tool engine for Batman

Telltale Games is to make some big changes to its Telltale Tool engine for its next title.

Telltale Tool is based on Lua, and designed to make bringing the developer’s distinctive brand of modern point-and-click adventure games to a variety of platforms – from PC and console to mobile – easier.

It was first used in Telltale Texas Hold’em in 2005, a year after the studio was founded.

Tool has gone on to power every Telltale release since, including The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us.

Third-party dev Straandlooper also used the tech in 2011’s Hector: Badge of Carnage, which was published by Telltale.

Discussing the upcoming self-titled spin-off to the Batman franchise currently in development, Telltale said that the engine would be “’very upgraded’ from past Telltale games”.

It added that the engine’s use in Batman would be a “more significant step up from past games on a technical/creative level than previous TTG games” and that it would be “premiering lots of ‘new’ TTG stuff in Batman”.

The studio added that Batman’s style would be closer to the cartoon visuals of graphic novel adaptations The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead than realistic TV tie-in Game of Thrones.
