World of Warcraft amasses 100 million lifetime players

More than 100 million people have registered to play Blizzard’s fantasy MMO World of Warcraft during its lifetime.

The game has been played in 244 countries and territories around the world, with 500 million characters created in-game. From these, over nine million guilds were also formed.

With video playthroughs and broadcasting becoming ever-more popular in the game industry, Blizzard also reported it had received 87 million views on the official World of Warcraft YouTube channel.

26 million WoW-related videos have also been posted on the video sharing site, and the game is said to be the subject of 50 million searches per year.

Despite launching in 2004 in the US, World of Warcraft is still said to be the world’s most-subscribed MMO, although it should be noted many modern massive multiplayer games have adopted the free-to-play model, or a hybrid of the two.

As of September 2013, World of Warcraft was said to still have some 7.6 million users.
