Virginia developer Variable State staffs up for next project

Who says no-one hires in December? Variable State, the developer of the BAFTA and Writers Guild award winning Virginia, has recently brought in a number of new employees, as well as welcoming back some old friends.

Danny Gallagher joins the studio as its new technical lead. His impressive CV includes stints at Supermassive Games, Bossa Studios and Mind Candy, but he joins Variable State from SFB Games, where he was lead programmer on Snipperclips. He also has his own games label, House of Wire, under which he releases his own titles.

Gallagher’s code is supported by a slew of artistic hires, including a new character artist Shayleen Hulbert, who comes from 22Cans where she worked on The Trail. Meanwhile, Noah Li joins the studio as an animator, tasked with breathing life into Hulbert’s characters.

Two new appointees are returning regulars, back from their own spin-off adventures. Stevie Brown worked on Virginia, but escaped to work with Vindit, makers of action RPG Quote. He also collaborated on Nicolae Berbece’s Those Awesome Guys.

2D artist Conor Mccann returns from working on his solo album, including games Black Gold and Rotor. The latter of which was showcased at Fantastic Arcade this year.

Fans of Virginia’s soundtrack will be happy to hear to that Variable State is continuing its collaboration with Lyndon Holland, who will offering his BAFTA-winning expertise in the form of composer, sound designer and writer.

Considering the critical success of Virginia, we can’t wait to see what the newly strengthened studio can create for us next. Hopefully we’ll hear more in the new year.
