Company working across games, film and TV acquired virtual reality developer Digital Funk Machine in June

VFX firm Digital Domain partners with DreamWorks to bring Shrek to VR

Visual effects specialist Digital Domain has struck a deal with DreamWorks Animation to develop VR experiences based on the film studio’s most successful IP.

Among the franchises set to make the jump into virtual reality are Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, which were highlighted as the first VR releases from the company.

In early June, Digital Domain bolstered its position in the VR sector by purchasing virtual reality developer Digital Funk Machine and forming Digital Domain Interactive, led by the studio’s founder, Jeremy Airey.

The division was said at the time to be focused on producing VR content, as well as other ‘interactive experiences’.

“For over two decades, DreamWorks Animation has been entertaining audiences with some of the most original stories and beloved characters in entertainment,” said Digital Domain MD Rich Flier. “We are honored to be a part of bringing that great legacy to virtual reality audiences worldwide.

“This relationship marks another major step forward as Digital Domain continues its drive to become the industry leader in producing and distributing VR content. With its cutting edge VR tools, artists are continually able to push the boundaries of VR and redefine what is possible.”
