Studio behind VR platformer Lucky’s Tale raises $25m in funding

Playful, the developer behind virtual reality title Lucky’s Tale, has been given a sizeable bump by its latest round of investment.

The studio announced the 3D platforming game for the Oculus Rift VR headset last year, with the title differing from its VR peers by providing a more traditional overhead camera – as opposed to many VR games’ fixation on first-person viewpoints.

Playful was formed by Words with Friends co-creator Paul Bettner; Lucky’s Tale is the outlet’s first game.

Now, Playful has announced that more than $25 million in funding has been provided by ‘a group of private investors’.

The cash will apparently go straight back into the studio’s development efforts, building games specifically for VR platforms like the Rift.

Interactive entertainment is the 21st century art form,” said Bettner.

Now, thanks to breakthrough technologies, our players will literally inhabit our stories, reach out and embrace our characters. It is indistinguishable from magic.

That’s why we raised this money. Because the most important growth opportunity our industry has ever experienced is starting now.”

Playful is targeting a launch for Lucky’s Tale alongside the consumer version of the Oculus Rift early in 2016.
