OpenFeint founder's studio wants to reach one billion players

Fates Forever dev secures funding from Tencent and Benchmark

US mobile and tablet game developer Hammer & Chisel has closed its Series B funding round from investors Tencent, Benchmark Capital and YouWeb’s 9+.

The studio was set up in 2012 by OpenFeint founder Jason Citron and last year released iPad-only MOBA Fates Forever. With the new round of funding, the studio has said it aims to reach one billion players.

The amount of investment in the studio was not disclosed. A previous funding round raised $8.2m from investors including Benchmark Capital, Accel Partners, IDC Capital partners and Time Warner.

"There are an estimated 100,000,000 to 200,000,000 core gamers right now – growing at a rapid pace,” said Citron.

“We think there’s tremendous opportunity to craft high end, respectful experiences tailored to the mobile play patterns of core gamers. This investment paves the way for us to bring high end mobile games to emerging markets all around the world, which constitutes a substantial percentage of the future core gaming population."
