Destiny 2 chalks up 1.2million concurrent users in first weekend – Bungie

Destiny 2 has finally arrived and the teams here at Develop and our sister sites MCV and Esports Pro are all deeply invested in our Guardians. It seems we are not alone.

According to developer Bungie, who tweeted the information on Saturday, Destiny 2 had over 1.2 million concurrent players online. That was at 7:24 pm in the UK so that covers most of Europe in the evening and a fair amount of America both in the early afternoon and late morning on the East and West coasts respectively.

Destiny 2 launched on September 6th in the UK and, following the release of today’s weekly charts, was the best selling game in the UK last week, entering straight in at number 1. However, the retail performance of the game was less than expected by being 58 per cent down on the release of Destiny, back on September 9th, 2014.

It is likely that the drop in retail numbers signifies an increasing move to digital distribution and, if the concurrent figures are anything to go by, the retails sales are no indication of the number of people that have bought the game.
