AESVI Italian games market 2017 breakdown – top sellers, total value, hardware sold and more

This morning we received a load of data from the Italian games trade body AESVI, which summarises the territory’s games market for 2017, working with GSD (Games Sales Data), Gametrack and AppAnnie – all absed on a new methodology driven by ISFE (Interactive Software Federation of Europe) – which will be providing a combined physical and digital chart for the UK from January 2019. The full data is available here.

The new methodology provided a grand total of €1.477bn (£1.286bn), though we don’t have year-on-year figures for this new figure. That was split into €428m (£372m) on hardware and €1.049bn (£913m) on software.

Console hardware units totalled 1,115,351 home consoles sold and 135,747 portable consoles. Controllers led the accessories category with 974,951 sold with a total value of €47.3m (£41.2m).

Software sales were split fairly evenly between physical, digital and app purchases, as you can see in the graph below.

And the top-sellers across various categories shown below (we’re just trying to clarification on the exact nature of these).

There’s also an interesting breakdown of unit sales in game genres. With 19.5m console action games sold, 1.62m shooters, 1.44m sports games, 835k racing games, 829k RPGs, 749k adventure games, 421k fighting games, 260k strategy games and 278k family and casual games.
