MMO smashes records as it hits new milestone
Chris Roberts’ in-development space sim Star Citizen has amassed more than $10 million through crowdfunding.
The milestone means the project has gained more money through crowdfunding than any other game.
The developer also claimed it has raised more investment than any other crowdfunding campaign in history, with E-Paper watch Pebble having raised $10.2million on Kickstarter, $400,000 short of Star Citizen's $10.6m at the time of writing.
The crowdfunding campaign for Star Citizen was launched in October last year, and had a target of $2 million. Speaking to Develop at the time, creator Chris Roberts said the title from his new studio Cloud Imperium Games would be a cross between Wing Commander, Freelancer and Privateer.
Despite being initially reticent to take the project to Kickstarter, Roberts eventually brought the game to the site where it raised $2.1 million, four times more than its $500,000 funding goal.
The MMO, powered by CryEngine 3, is being developed for PC and is currently set to be released in 2014.
