Stainless Games now developing iPhone titles

Downloadable games studio will have first game live on App Store soon

UK independent studio Stainless Games has announced it is making games for the iPhone.

It’s just the latest developer to announce its support for the platform and, although under NDA, the firm has revealed its first iPhone game will appear very soon. The Apple App Store, which distributes iPhone games, launches at the end of the week.

The studio has widened its internal cross-platform development engine Beelzebub to make games for the increasingly popular Apple smartphone.

Stainless is well known in the games industry for its prolific Xbox Live Arcade work – it has 12 titles for Microsoft’s download channel finished or in the works.

CEO Patrick Buckland said making games for the device was a no-brainer for his team.

“I personally go back a long way with Apple; having started out writing for Apple machines in 1979 – and have had a lot of success on Apple platforms over the years – particularly with Carmageddon 1 and 2, and my own Crystal Quest IP. Given recent trends, the iPhone is doubly interesting – since it’s both a truly next-gen machine with an ‘always-on’ connection and a format with a great direct sales route to the consumer.”

COO Matt Edmunds added: “We already support all download platforms; XBLA, PS3, PSP, PC and Wii under the umbrella of our custom development environment. Thus it was a logical step to include iPhone, so we can now offer our customers a complete range of download platform options.”
