Second annual game-commissioning event set for September

The second annual ‘Get in the Game’ talent-spotting event will once again be supported by Sony, with the show set to commence with a launch party on September 1.

Phil Gaskell of Sony’s external development division, XDev Studio Europe, said he was “confident” that some of the ideas shown at the annual event will get to market.

The game-commissioning project will have SCEE spend two days hearing new game pitches from various aspiring developers. The five most promising ideas will each be awarded a £10,000 grant, receive project consultancy and, crucially, an opportunity to pitch ideas to XDev Studio Europe.

Last year saw five separate groups awarded the £10,000 grant. At least two of those ideas are now under the eyes of Sony, which will consider whether they should be taken forward as a PSN game.

The initiative will once again be produced by videogames consultancy Pixel-Lab, with Northwest Vision and Media providing the £10,000 grants.

"[Last year] it was reassuring to see a commitment of public funding like this from Northwest Vision & Media,” added Gaskell. “It's clearly helped the teams involved strengthen their skills in many areas.

Enda Carey, Northwest Vision and Media's head of games, was “delighted” with the response to the first Get in the Game project.
