Entrepreneur brings industry expertise to young studio

Segerstrale joins Supercell board

Former EA EVP of digital Kristian Segerstrale has joined the board of directors at Clash of Clans developer Supercell.

Segerstrale, who has formed studios such as Glu Mobile and Playfish, was previously part of the Initial Capital team that invested in the mobile and tablet gaming outfit in 2010.

Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen said the industry veteran would bring a valuable and relevant set of experiences to help with its long-term decision making and help build on the company’s success with Hay Day and Clash of Clans.

“Very few individuals move as seamlessly between start-ups and large scale public companies as Kristian, and I would be hard pressed to find someone with a more valuable and relevant set of experiences to help us in our decision making as we navigate the challenges that lie ahead,” said Paananen.

“However, at Supercell we never focus on experience alone, and what really struck a chord with us was Kristian’s focus on talent and building winning company cultures throughout all his ventures – values that we cherish at Supercell.

“He also shares our passion to build a successful company for the coming decades and our focus on long term decision making accordingly. That and the fact that our house band really needed a keyboard player.”

Supercell has experienced astronomical growth since it was formed in 2010 on the back of its two titles Hay Day and Clash of Clans.

In April it was revealed that the games were generating $2.4 million a day for the company. A report also claimed that, after raising between $100m-to-$150m in a funding round, the company was valued at around $800 million.
