Fortnite developer apologises for resulting service issues
Recently discovered security exploits in Intel and AMD CPU chipsets have led to swift action by the manufacturers, which have released patches to prevent access to your private information by nefarious hackers. This is the good news. The bad news is that these patches have had a major impact on some cloud services that use these chipsets, resulting in slow load times and service issues across multiple games.
Fortnite develop Epic has posted an update on the situation on its community forums, which explains the reason behind the issues. It’s likely other developers taking advantage of cloud services for their games will also suffer from the security patches over the coming weeks as cloud servers are updated en mass.
“All of our cloud services are affected by updates required to mitigate the Meltdown vulnerability,” the Fortnite update states. “We heavily rely on cloud services to run our back-end and we may experience further service issues due to ongoing updates.
“Unexpected issues may occur with our services over the next week as the cloud services we use are updated. We are working with our cloud service providers to prevent further issues and will do everything we can to mitigate and resolve any issues that arise as quickly as possible.”
